17 August 2023 ............... East of Nash Point

A walk around the area to the east of Nash Point - and the most obvious things are the two lighthouses - this is the original lighthouse -

 the original lighthouse

The coastal path goes right through the middle of the lighthouse estate so access is not a problem - further into the estate - and the massive fog horns in the middle of the picture, and the newer lighthouse at the back -

Back out of the lighthouse estate, and following a very exposed path along the cliff tops and the start of some quite good views of the cliffs -

Looking eastwards to the cliffs below the old lighthouse -

From this bit of the cliff tops there is a good view looking westwards across to Nash Point - and this view shows off Nash Point as quite a distinct headland -

Maybe worth noting that these pictures were taken round about the mid tide level - at higher tide levels all the beaches are covered.

An update - since my visit there and writing up this webpage I have now found out that there isn`t an old and a new lighthouse - they were both built at the same in 1832 - they were to mark the position of the deadly Nash Sands - a huge sandbank offshore that caused several ship losses and numerous fatalities.

Although the sands had a history of shipwrecks it was the wreck of a passenger vessel - the Frolic - in 1831 with the loss of 78 lives that finally prompted the building of the lighthouses - they were built in record time and started working on 1st September 1832.

The light in the smaller tower was discontinued in the 1920`s, and was removed from the smaller tower in the 1950`s.

Nash Point lighthouse was the last lighthouse in Wales to be un-manned, and the second last lighthouse in the UK to be un-manned.
