The river was a few inches higher than the day before, and not all that different. I took my camera down the river with me, so captured various photos of different bits of the river.
Don`t be fooled by the pictures, the weather was dire - every time I got out to take a picture, it rained, and there was a strong wind blowing up the river. By the time I got to Hell Hole corner, it was getting too dark for decent pictures. The ones for Thistlebrig were taken before I ran the river.
The water was over the top of the gauge at Burnmouth, it was just identifiable by the small wave over the top of it.
Looking up river towards the Linn - as you can see, the islands have just about gone, and the two river left channels down the Linn are one big channel at this level.
The Linn bypass is a good run, but requires a fair bit of route picking to avoid trees, so at least grade 3 and a bit. The first exit is quite straightforward, but a bit rough at the bottom end.
However unlike at lower levels, the second exit is the better route - there is enough water for you to go round the trees that cause problems at lower levels, and there is a narrow fast twisting route down - good fun !
Wall ?
What wall !
This is what the weir looks like at this level, viewed from the left bank. Unfortunately, you can`t really see the size of the stoppers.
There is a nice chicken run hard river left, starting right up against the stone wall.
Coming down the centre presented few problems. There are some odd bits and pieces river left which may be playable.
The chicken run hard right once again provided an easy way down.
Thistlebrig is fairly washed out at this level, and is quite rough - there is a long green wave river left.
Fast, and too washed out for my kayak. The foam pile displayed a strange characteristic that I have never seen before - most of the time, it was a good quality foam pile all the way down the trough. However every now and then, the foam pile just disappeared, and then there was nothing there except a green wave. I watched a guy in a playboat coming down the river side-on as he approached the trough. Just as he got to it, the foam pile all but dissappeared, and he just got washed straight through.
