River trips

2.6 metres ........ 24 June 2007

Because I knew that the best part of the river at this level is Wee Eric, the wave below Thistlebrig, I didn`t go up to the Linn, just ran straight down from the get in down to Thistlebrig, stopping for some brief looks at the weir and at Hell Hole corner. Predictably, the wave below Thistlebrig was superb.

Weir

At this level the chicken run hard left is barely runnable, you would scrape down the concrete ramp, and meet rocks at the bottom. If you are desperate, you could run down maybe about 4 metres out from the bank where the water is just a bit deeper, but it is a bit messy. The main chute is straightforward, just run it with a bit of a right to left diagonal line.

Rapid down to Hell Hole corner

Coming down the centre presented few problems.

Hell Hole corner

As expected for this level, Hell Hole corner is a confused and complex mixture of cross currents, haystacks, waves, etc.

Thistlebrig

Thistlebrig is fairly washed out at this level, and the easiest run down is to stay right of centre down past the white water on each side of you.

Wave below Thistlebrig

Superb !

The river right side was a smooth green wave which was excellent for surfing by wimps like me in my old-fashioned play boat.

The river left side would be excellent for shorter modern playboats, with a foam pile almost down the trough.

I also went across to the other side of the river, and found some interesting little play spots, including a very nice small stopper which was quite playful.
