Lack of time meant I didn`t go down the river, just stayed the whole time at the Linn - which is probably the best bit of this whole section of the Tay at this level anyway.
Eight different routes down the Linn.
The most river right channel provided four routes - starting hard right, there was a route down just out from the rock wall, just missing the messy white water against the wall. It was a bit rocky, but I didn`t really hit anything.
The big mound of rock a bit over to the left, which forms a large rocky nose, had just enough water to run over the top of it. I only scraped the rock at one bit.
The hole on the river left side of the channel was easily done by going right over the ridge of water in the bottom of the hole.
The last route down this channel was right over the top of the large lump of water that sits on top of the shoulder to the right of the hole.
All of these routes were easier than they looked.
The next channel is split in two by rocks at this level, and there was a nice route down each side - they looked a bit messy, but were quite clean to paddle down.
The third channel had the usual very fast chute down on the left, which leads into a fast stream down beside the rock wall. On my first run down it, I didn`t get far enough to the left, and ended up going right down the fast stream against the wall, half the time with my bow in the air. My second run worked perfectly, a neat diagonal line meant that I punched through a small stopper just to the left of the chute, and ended up in the calmer water to the right of the fast stream.
The last channel, the most river left one had a huge hole, then the usual huge diagonal wave. My run down to the left of the wave worked okay, I just met a short bit of the confused water below the Linn, before escaping to the left. It is quite intimidating running down beside the huge wave.
The Linn bypass is running well, and probably would provide a straightforward grade 2/3 river, however there are obstacles, mostly trees, which need to be avoided. The first exit would provide the best route.
I found that right over on the river left side, below the big island below and to the left of the Linn, there is a nice surfing wave. I got to it by running down the left side of the island. The right hand end of the wave washes you sideways as you surf, so it maybe best to approach the wave over to the left. It`s not going to win any prizes as a surf wave, but it is definitely worth a visit.
