River trips

1.35 metres ........ 05 November 2006

This is an in-between level - some bits are too high, other bits aren`t high enough !

The Linn

4 or 5 seperate channels over the rocks, depending on how you look at it.

The main channel on the left has the usual standing wave, and at least 100 metres downstream of large whirlpools and boils. Probably runnable hard left, as usual.

The next channel is mostly rocky, except at the river right end of this channel, where there is a 2 metre wide shoot, which drops into a significant hole. Possibly runnable, the slickest route would be a diagonal path down the shoot, right to left as you go down, so that you just miss the hole.

The other channels aren`t worth doing.

Linn bypass

The Linn bypass is running, but very rocky at the bottom end, so not really runnable

Wall

Not really enough water to make the wall effective for tailies.

Wave right hand side of wall

It is surfable, but probably not worth the bother.

Weir

Some parts of the weir are just visible, most of the weir has a thin layer of water over it.

The main, middle, chute is smooth and fast, developing into significant waves lower down. The first wave is too flat and too fast for surfing. The second wave may be surfable.

Rapid down to Hell Hole corner

Continuous bouncy. The ability to move sideways left and right whilst coming down the rapid would help to avoid the bigger obstacles.

The man made groins are starting to show, and result in some playspots, as well as providing good sites for intermediate paddlers to practise tricky break-ins and outs.

Hell Hole corner

The main rapid on the right is just bouncy.

The diagonal wave extreme river left is surfable, but hard work. There is an interesting surfable shallow green wave just above the drop down to the main river level.

There are plenty of play bits down the bottom of the drop, on the river left. You can have fun trying to get right round the rock bottom left - there is a quite a big cushion on it.

Down to the Mill

There is nothing of substance in this section. The famous hole river left above the mill is there, but fast, and washing through. If you miss it, don`t bother trying to get back to it.

Thistlebrig

Thistlebrig is quite confused at this level, with some big standing waves and holes. However there is just enough water coming down river right to allow less able paddlers to bypass the whole of the messy bit.

There are some good playspots down the bottom river left, including a small stopper which holds you quite firmly, but can be escaped with a bit of effort.
