River trips

0.53 metres ........ 27 October 2007

This was the last day of an amazing spell of weather for October - a virtually complete lack of rain in the centre and east of Scotland for three weeks meant that the Tay had been at summer level for all of those three weeks, and in all I had five trips at these low levels, four of them in the last week.

Just for the record, here`s the levels for the other three :-

On this trip, the level was at the lowest level of all the trips, and just because it was so unusual for October, I took a picture of the gauge at Burnmouth.

photograph of the height gauge at Burnmouth, with the river level right down at the bottom of the gauge

Pretty amazing for October - and that night a belt of heavy rain moved right across Scotland, and the next day, the river rose by 1.8 metres in 6 hours. Which is also pretty amazing !

Weir

The wave was good - the ridge of water coming down into the dip was still there, but surfing whilst sitting upright instead of lying back, and using cutbacks to keep out of the hole, meant that I could surf right above the ridge, on the steepest part of the wave, instead of on the flatter portion off to the side. It also meant that 180`s were just possible, but 360`s were beyond me, as by that time I was off the wave.
