22nd December 2023 - an astronomically important day - the Winter Solstice.
To be strictly accurate the Winter Solstice isn`t a day - it is a time - and on this year it was at 03.27 AM on the 22nd December 2023.
Or 03.28 AM depending on which website you look at.
On top of that there was a strong south east flowing Jet Stream sitting right over the UK.
And there was a massive high high pressure sitting off to the southwest of the UK, and a massive low low pressure sitting off to the east of the UK - so lots of tight isobars bringing strong west / northwest wind to the whole of the UK.
Seemed like a good day for a trip along part of the coastal path to the east of Ogmore.
And it was wild - but with good lighting in the sky across the Bristol Channel - this picture is quite unusual in that there are two separate sets of shafts of sunlight, one set at the front, the other set much further back -
Looking down on the wild sea crashing onto the Black Rocks -
Down closer to sea level now, sitting in the lee of a gorse bush which acted as a very effective wind break - and another good lighting effect -
There was a good view looking eastwards away along the cliffs as far as Nash Point -
Another good lighting effect -
I was sitting there watching the various lighting effects and I noticed a set of big waves crashing onto the rocks off to my side - so I whipped round and grabbed it with the camera - three blasts in one shot - the picture came out quite well considering I didn`t have any time to frame it -
The last of the shafts of sunlight -
Back up on top of the cliffs heading back to my starting point - and a last look along the coast to the east as the light was beginning to fade at the end of the shortest day of the year -
