out and about - 2021
03 January 2021 ............... Up on Beinn Lora - sort of
Another very cold and clear day, and a trip around the lower parts of Beinn Lora - excellent views from the viewpoints. I have no idea whether it is the forestry who provide all the viewpoints and their benches or the council - but they are great.
I did try to go higher up, but the path was getting more and more slippy. In the lower stretches, the grit on the path was frozen hard, but for most of it there was still enough grittyness to allow cautious but possible walking - but higher up it was getting up to the snow line, and the path was increasingly covered in hard packed frozen snow and ice, and becoming quite dodgy for me at least. Other people seemed to cope with it, not sure how. Never thought I would want crampons to walk up through the forest on Beinn Lora.
Up at one of the viewpoints, and very clear looking away down to the south past Mull right down to Colonsay -
I am not sure, but I think that this is Ben More hiding away inside its woolly hat -
The Corbetts on Kingairloch weren`t hiding in the cloud, but they weren`t all that clear, they were rather merging into the sky - I have seen better views of them.
Rather interesting vertical scars on the side of the hill on the left at the back. The lower hill in front of it has got the obvious natural random gorges that you often get on hills - but on the hill at the back they are regularily spaced, uniform depths, and just don`t look natural. Would they be glacial - did glaciers slide down the sides of hills ?
On the way back down there is a brief but surprising view up to what I think is one of the Munros just to the south of Ballachulish - nice colouring in the sky -
