out and about - 2020

26 July 2020 ................ Two sunsets

This foul July weather goes on and on - lots of low cloud, rain on and off, and of course the midges.

There has been a couple of days when for a few hours it was hot enough to get a bit of sunbathing, but it never lasts.

A bit of a break in the weather this evening to give a sort of sunset -

Re my recent comments about staycations, it was interesting to see that Gower has been listed as the top place in the UK for a staycation - Gower is a sort of peninsula down on the South Wales coast in West Glamorgan, just to the west of Swansea.

It isn`t as well known as the likes of Snowdonia or the Brecon Beacons, however it does have lots of features which would make it attractive as a holiday destination - lots of beaches, some very busy, some completely empty.

Rhossili beach is known as one of the finest beaches in Europe.

A sea temperature that is warm enough to make swimming fun, rather than the freezing cold masochistical endurance exercise it is on the west coast of Scotland.

There is an unofficial but well documented naturist beach area along at the west end of Gower.

Some dramatic coastal walks along much of the south coast - many of them on good quality laid paths - with fabulous rock formations, and culminating in the somewhat famous Worms Head.

And super views out across the Bristol Channel.

Worms Head itself presents a challenging walk and scramble if you want to get out to it, but watch out for the tides. Not suitable for the less able or any kind of wheels.

A good selection of campsites and activity centres, as well as rock climbing venues, surfing and water sports.

Lots of archaeological features such as Neolithic burial chambers.

And caves - South Wales is somewhat famous for its caves, and Gower has dozens of them.

Gower isn`t the easiest of places to get to, you get rather bogged down in the western outskirts of Swansea, but once through them good roads right to the far west end.

A bit different from the cloud and the rain and the midges which seem to be afflicting the west coast of Scotland quite badly this year - cloud and rain and midges are a normal characteristic of the west coast of Scotland, but this year does seem to a bit worse than usual.

To end, a bit of a taste of Gower, the photographs were taken a few years ago - fabulous morning lighting over Mumbles at the east end of Gower -
