out and about - 2017

18 December 2017 .............. Around the Stacks

I had this weird idea - I decided it would be a good idea to cycle up to the Stacks.

I parked in the car park beside the Range, and headed off.

It is non stop up - up - up - up ...........

However I am somewhat proud of the fact that I made it up to the RSPB visitor centre without having to get off and push.

At the visitor centre there is a tiny bit of downhill before the road continues on vertically up the hill.

I even made it up there as well, over the top, and then up the concrete road up to all the radio stations.

Up on the flatter area between the Stacks, and a good view down to North Stack - the signalling station was just about catching the sun, higher up the hill it was cloud.

Holyhead Mountain was sulking, and did not want to be photographed -

not a picture of Holyhead Mountain

Further along, and a closer view down to the signalling station and Ynys Arw - the huge Parliament House Cave is just out of sight below the signalling station -

I eventually got right across to the foot of Holyhead Mountain, and reckoned I would see if I could get up to the summit - on foot that is, not on my bike.

Heading up, and starting to get into the cloud - so a photograph taken before I lost all my view - a rather spooky view through the bottom edge of the cloud across to South Stack -

Up on the summit now - and my only view was the cairn, or trig point, complete with the handy little signs telling me what I can see - if only I had been able to see anything.

It could really do with a coat of paint, and why aren`t there any red dragons on it like the trig points on Fan Frynych and Fan Fawr in the Brecon Beacons ?

There wasn`t much point in hanging around, so I started to head down - but just at that moment the sun put in appearance - sort of -

the cairn and the sun - sort of

Away back down and back across to South Stack - looking down on South Stack lighthouse, and the sun just about to set -

Up at the back of the car park above South Stack, and the sun is into sunset mode -

 the start of the sunset

Not long to go, as the sun sinks down behind the layer of cloud above the horizon -

I couldn`t afford to sit and watch it any further, as I had to get back to the Range car park before the end of daylight, so I zoomed off - and zoom is the right word - miles of downhill - superb !

Back at the Range car park in a remarkably short time - and I could see quite a strongly coloured afterglow - so I carried on across the Range to Penrhyn Mawr - and some super colours -

 the fabulous afterglow

It was now a good 30 minutes since the sun had started to dissappear behind the cloud, so a very long afterglow - just starting to fade now, but still amazing -

 the beginning of the end
