The very cold and clear air coming down from the north brought the most amazing sunset this evening - a sunset that didn`t evolve, it suddenly changed, then suddenly changed again, and then again.
The early stages were attractive enough, with a small area of brightness with a bit of colour that stretched away along the horizon, but not very high into the sky.
I shot these through an upstairs bedroom window - it is nice that the sunsets are now happening well out to the side of the house across the way, so I get a good view of them.
Here is one of the earlier ones -
Then a small cloud came along crossing from right to left, and it caused a neat shadow above it.
Some not too obvious shafts of light heading up into the sky -
The sunset didn`t appear to be going anywhere, minor variations, but no significant changes. So I decided I would jump on my bike and nip up the back lane up the hill, to watch the rest of the sunset from up there.
I got pretty much the same outlook, but was higher up so well above the houses.
But when I got up there, there had been a change - these two fish shaped clouds had arrived, and they just sat there, nicely lit up.
There wasn`t much change for 5 minutes or so, then suddenly the whole sky exploded into patches of colour -
I started to take pictures of it - suddenly the camera battery was flat. Oh no. Disaster.
I think it must have been the cold - the camera has very thin plug-in flat pack lithium-ion batteries, and they are incredibly susceptible to the cold.
So I jumped back on my bike and shot back down the track and back to the house, grabbed another battery, and shot upstairs to the bedroom again.
Well I don`t think I missed much - this is what greeted me -
It stayed pretty well like this for several minutes, then suddenly it was gone, and we were back to just a small area of colour just above the horizon.
What an amazing sunset - and who needs fireworks - nature can beat anything that mankind can produce.
