It was still good weather by the afternoon, so I headed up the road, then went away along Ardeer beach, though by the time I was heading along the beach the cloud was building up.
Down at the far end of the beach, and there are places you can climb up onto the top of the dunes, and look past the now rather old security fencing out over the peninsula - it is a surprisingly big area, and despite it all being a brownfield development area, a lot of it is still quite wild dune hinterland.
This is looking back to the left -
Round to the right, and more dune hinterland, and you can just see the back end of the Big Idea, with Irvine visible across the Garnock estuary.
Still up on the dunes, and looking out to sea, and the cloud was producing some lovely silvery lighting over towards Arran.
Heading back along the beach now, and the silvery lighting continued on.
And on, as I headed back -
Back on the headland, and Arran is getting nicely silhouetted against the lighter sky.
The cloud thickened, the sun dissappeared, and I thought that this would be the end of the sunset.
But then this happened - incredible !
The summits of the mountains were causing the shadows - what an amazing effect.
It seemed to go on for quite a long time, and I took several pictures of it, but I see from the metadata that this lighting effect lasted for just three minutes.
There wasn`t much to be seen for the next fifteen minutes or so, and then it burst into a full colour sunset, which slowly faded over the next ten minutes or so.
What a rich source of sunsets the Ayrshire coast is turning out to be.
That would normally be the end, but the sky hadn`t quite finished displaying its wonders - a while later, after all the colour was gone, we were left with some fascinating wispy cloud formations.
