out and about - 2016

03 June 2016 .............. Seil

The west coast of Scotland maybe isn`t famous for its sunshine, but when the rain stops and the sun does shine, it is incredibly scenic.

So with the continuing period of good weather it seemed to be a good time for a trip to that part of the country - the drive down through Seil isn`t that interesting, it is a slow road, with not many views - however once down the bottom end of Seil things open up.

So here are a few pictures taken on a trip down there.

Cuan is right down at the bottom end of Seil, but is rather shut in, but it does provide a classic image of the west coast with the ferry crossing over to Luing.

Back up the road a bit, then across to the west of Seil, and there are some amazing views out to the Firth of Lorne.

Here is a wider view looking down to the southwest - on the left of the picture the island with the hill is Scarba, and just in front of it, but not very obvious, is the island of Lunga - it appears to merge into Scarba, but is separated from Scarba by a narrow tidal stream called the Grey Dogs.

In the middle of the picture are the two islands Eilean Dubh Mór and Eilean Dubh Beag.

Further over to the right are the Garvellachs.

Just making it into the right hand side of the picture is Dubh-fhèith, a rocky outcrop that lies midway between Easdale and the Garvellachs.

Here is a closer view of the area to the northwest of Scarba, and you can just make out the lighthouse on Fladda, and just to its right you can see the flat island which is Belnahua.

Round to the right, and a closer view of the Garvellachs looking fantastic. You can just make out Colonsay away in the distance.

Although it doesn`t look it in the picture, the Garvellachs are actually a chain of islands over 6 kilometres long, with three larger islands, and several smaller islands. From Seil you are looking right down the centre line of the chain, so you just don`t see the individual islands.

Looking over the top of the island of Easdale and the village of Ellenabeich to the fabulous looking east coast of Mull.

Another closer view of the cliffs on Mull taken from the big car park in Ellenabeich - I would love to go visit those cliffs, but I don`t know how to do it as a day trip, they are quite remote, even if you are on Mull.
