08 April 2016 .............. Worms Head to Thurba

Once back on the mainland after my trip out to Worms Head, I headed off to the right along a low level path - this isn`t the official coastal path, it is just a path that is - well, just a path.

It winds its way around the coast below the crags above.

Good progress to begin with, then it suddenly gets into the rocks - big sloping rock shelves that needed a bit of scrambling to get up and over.

They went on and on, but finally I was on top of them, and could see right around Mewslade Bay.

A bit round to the right, and the coast and the cliffs sweep round away beyond The Knave, which was the end point of my last trip.

A lovely walk across the empty beach towards the next headland -

and a bit further along -

Further along the beach, and a big cave - the photo doesn`t really give any sense about how big it is. It is obviously used by climbers, since there was a sling hanging from the roof.

Time to head up on to the tops - on a top looking further along the coast - Thurba is the headland at the far end of the bay.

A bit along the tops, and a fine spur -

Another view across to Thurba, not quite so far away now.

Another fine spur -

Tucked into the green at the back of the spurs is this - I don`t what it is, or its history. This was one of two openings, the other one is round to the side.

Whoever built it obviously took a lot of trouble to blend it into the background.

the stone thing - what ever it is

On the next spur, looking back along the cliffs.

On the last spur before Thurba, and looking across to Thurba - from here it is a long walk across to Thurba, because you have to go away down almost to sea level, and away inland to go round a long and deep bay, then climb away back up again.

Up on Thurba now, and surprisingly, Thurba has a very narrow summit, you get no idea of this when you are looking along to Thurma from either direction. I did get to the end.

looking out to the point of Thurba

You can barely see it, but the darker patch is actually a hole that drops straight down to the sea - it`s a big drop.

Thurba is a good viewpoint - looking further along the coast - The Knave isn`t too obvious, it is just beside the small rocky island. So I still have to do the next few headlands - I wonder if I will ever do them.

Looking back to Worms Head - you can just see Worms Head over the far headland.

Thurba had been my intended destination, so I turned and headed back, sometimes on ad-hoc paths, sometimes on the official coastal path.

Back on the last headland, and looking along to Worms Head.

Round the Coastalwatch station, and back up the track to Rhossili just as the rain was starting - a last look back at Worms Head.

Quite a day !
