It is probably not very high on most peoples list of places to see, but I am rather chuffed to have a found a way to cycle right round Cornelly Quarry, and quite a lot of the way is off-road. It is a huge quarry, so it is a worthwhile trek around it.
Just because I was there, and so was it - here are a few pictures of it - and as you can see, it is a huge quarry. And just in case somebody doubts it, all the pictures were taken either over or through the chain link fence that surrounds the quarry - I was safely outside the fence !
Up on the public road by Stormy Down you are roughly 100 metres above sea level, and you can look over the top of the quarry, over the top of Porthcawl, across the Bristol Channel, and across to Devon - I was very lucky with timing, and there was a brief period of good visibility, and I could see along the Devon coast further than I ever seen before.
Looking at a map, I think that we are seeing right along to the sort of "corner" in the Devon coast a few kilometres to the west of Ilfracombe.
The good visibility didn`t last long, ten or so minutes later I was along on another vantage point, and it wasn`t nearly so good.
Later on down in Porthcawl, there was a bit of a sea mist coming in, and I could barely see across the Bristol Channel at all.
