12 November 2015 ........... Taff estuary

My first ever trip to Cardiff, but I wasn`t around the city centre, I was down by the Taff estuary - the Taff estuary is now a vast enclosed area seperated from the Bristol Channel by a barrage.

Looking at Google, it appears that the barrage is fairly major bit of engineering, and has a control room operated 24/7/365, and has some kind of visitor centre or centres.

Looking down the coast towards the barrage in the distance -

The sheltered water behind the barrage provides acres of berthing for yachts and other small craft - here are just some of them.

I also saw a water taxi scuttling about, but it was too far away to show in a picture.

I am not a great lover of cities, I prefer the more natural environment, even though cities sometimes provide some useful facilities.

However a city built right on a coastline can look quite impressive, and Cardiff seems to be making good use of the Taff estuary for that purpose, and there is a huge amount of buildings under construction all round the area, to add to the ones that are alreay there.

A bit more dramatic perhaps -

I rather like this last picture as a picture, and the cladding on the buildings against the grey sky suggest that it would look good in black and white - so after a little electronic manipulation, here it is.

 the monochrome version

I think it looks good in black and white, but here is another view, taken from a bit further around the estuary and actually taken a few days later - it looks better in colour.

Considering it was almost into dusk by now, I think it is quite surprising it has come out as well as it has.

 another view of the buildings

One of the things I noticed about producing photos in black and white is that black and white photos are a lot more sensitive to the gamma, brightness and contrast of the monitor that you are viewing them on.

Even quite small variations in these monitor characteristics can have quite a marked effect on how the photo looks, with colour photos small variations don`t seem to make nearly so much difference.

However there isn`t much I can do about it, there are hundreds of different monitors, tablets, phone screens out there - black and white won`t work on some of them.
