out and about - 2015

03 February 2015 .............. Abermenai Point

Rather cold, but a beautiful day, so good to get out somewhere - I went to Abermenai Point, which I have never been to before.

Abermenai Point is right at the southwest end of the Menai Straits, and is the most southerly point of Anglesey. At full tidal flow there is quite a tidal race there - I have seen it from up on one of the Eifionydd - and that is a several miles away !

I cycled right down through Newborough Forest, eventually coming out onto the beach of Malltreath Bay - it is a fabulous beach - this is looking north along the beach and across to Pen-y-parc, the headland across the other side of Malltreath Bay.

Turning round the other way, and heading along to Llanddwyn Island, you cross a narrow isthmus which connects Llanddwyn Island to the mainland - at least it does as long as there isn`t a high high tide.

From there you get a great view across to the Welsh mainland - including Snowdonia and the start of the Lleyn Peninsula - this is a wintery view of Snowdonia - rather hidden by cloud.

Just to the right, and a slightly closer view of the Eifionydd - a range of hills that include Mynydd Mawr on the left, the fabulous Nanttle Ridge in the middle, and Craig Cwm Silyn on the right.

And that was the end of my picture taking - battery was flat.

Trouble is, I don`t know if it is because it is now totally defunct, or whether I forgot to charge it. I am pretty sure I recharged it a couple of weeks ago. When it was new, I could take about 220 pictures from one charge - now it is down to about 40.

Don`t ever buy a camera with a built-in rechargeable battery - they are a pain !

My previous camera used Lithium dry cells - when they were flat, I just put in some new ones and carried on shooting - but with a built-in battery - you are .......!

So I headed off to Abermenai Point, right along the beach.

And when I got there, I came all the way back.

After a quick tour of Llanddwyn Island, it was back to Malltreath Bay, up through Newborough Forest again, and drove home - just in time to rush into the house, grab the older camera with its Lithium dry cells, and catch the last of a rather nice sunset where the sun was back-lighting a big block of dense cloud.

So it wasn`t the end of my picture taking after all !
