After another trip into Llanberis, I went back to Dinorwic Quarry again - and as it happened, it was extremely wet.
I am writing this some time later, and am now not sure when I was there, so the date is a guess that slips nicely in beside the previous visit.
So here are a few more views of the quarry, starting with part of a flat area or balcony above the huge hole on the left, I think it carried a railway, which maybe went through the tunnel, or maybe the tunnel was dug before the railway existed.
I think that at one point the balcony went right round the hole, but a huge landslip of spoil destroyed it - possibly the landslip that virtually finished the quarry.
Just to the left of the tunnel, and presumably some time after the tunnel had been dug, more of the hillside was removed, and the balcony was extended, and housed some buildings.
Another view of the buildings.
One of the walls above the balcony, which is used as a climbing venue, judging by the bolts !
Looking down on the lower levels of the quarry -
Higher up the quarry now, and on one of the ramps, the remains of a trolley - the buggies loaded with slate were pushed onto these trollies, and dropped down the ramp.
I came across this relic - the remains of a slate sleeper for the railway.
The remains of a winch house, with quite well preserved winch machinery - spoil from higher up had been building up around it - could have been a bit of a dangerous place to work !
The brake mechanism -
A couple of pictures of the bearings - note the fact that the bearings were split diagonally, so the bolts were not carrying a side force.
