I took my bike across the ferry, and cycled from the top to the bottom of Luing - this is a view out to the Firth of Lorne from a high point in the quarry to the north of Cullipool - and you are seeing Fladda, Belnahua, Eilean Dubh Mór and Eilean Dubh Beag, and the Garvellachs.
Like Belnahua, Luing was one of the slate islands, and the north end of Luing has been heavily affected by the slate quarry.
A closer view of Fladda -
and a closer view of Belnahua -
Looking down to Scarba over the top of Cullipool - sad to see that even in a small community like Luing people are quite happy just to dump their building waste just along the road from the houses.
I cycled my way down to Black Mill Bay - and a good view across to Scarba, on the right is Lunga, and the low point is the Grey Dogs - a somewhat famous or infamous passage through the islands that can have significant tide races, and very large seas through it - particularily during a Springs flood tide against a strong west wind.
I am writing this quite some time after the event, and I can`t remember how much further down through Luing I went. But I went sufficiently far south to get a view right through the Grey Dogs - they are of course a fair distance away, but you can still see the waves in the Grey Dogs. So it must have been quite rough out beyond Scarba and Lunga.
