20 September 2012 .............. Falls of Lora

I had a dawn raid at the Falls of Lora this morning to catch the flood tide - it was predicted to be 3.8 metres high, I think it was a bit higher than this, as the water was over the top of the wee post - the surfing beside the north pier was about average.

However the middle waves were a bit different from usual - the first time I tried I couldn`t catch any of the waves, and the waves seemed quite discontinuous. The second time I went round, maybe about 15 minutes later, I caught the first wave - it was almost holding me, but I had to have a burst of forward paddling quite often to stay on it.

Eventually I lost it, dropped back, and picked up the second wave. Surfing on this wave was a bit cleaner, and I was on it for a minute or so, and I got a few paddle twirls in.

However it was suffering from the disease which often affects these waves - every so often they just collapse, and you get washed backwards. They then rise up again, but by that time you are too far back, and can`t power over the crest back into the trough. So you have to try to pick up the next wave - which I did, and surfed that one for a minute or so, and more paddle twirls.

Eventually it collapsed as well, I drifted backwards and caught the fourth wave, which provided some more surfing. Then that collapsed, and I briefly picked up the fifth wave, but it didn`t last, and that was the end.

I went round again, got wahed through the first and second wave, picked up the third wave, and sat on that for quite a while, before losing it.

I have never before been able to surf all of the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth wave in one go - I think the Romany Surf RM was showing its worth with the surfing today. So it was a good morning.
