Protection of application software

Application software on the hard drive of a PC can get corrupted for several reasons, including operator mistakes, malicious damage, virus corruption, or mechanical failure.

It is therefore good policy to keep two copies of all the application software on removable disk, tape, or nowadays, on CD-ROM, in case the application on the hard drive gets corrupted for any reason.

One copy will be the original disks or CD-ROM supplied by the application software manufacturer.

The other copy will be a copy made in-house of the originals.

Normally, the original disks will be locked away, and the 2nd. generation in-house copy will be used for routine re-installs.
