A clear day, before another front arrived, so I went for a trip round Carnedd Filiast and Elidir Fawr.
However instead of heading up the road to the dam, I cut across to the left, and went up the un-named 721 metre peak to the north of Carnedd Filiast, and then up to Carnedd Filiast.
Having done it once, I have little desire to do it again - it wasn`t much fun as a route - a lot of quite deep and lumpy heather, then a steep climb up through more heather, tufty grass, and numerous rocks meant it was hard going.
I guess there is a bit of a mind-warping factor here - if there was no other way up a mountain I would just do it without thinking about it, but since I knew there was a much easier and quicker way up the road, it made it seem worse.
Up on the 721 metre summit, and looking up to Carnedd Filiast -
Looking across to Elidir Fawr - there must have been quite a depth of snow at one point in the basin to the north of Elidir Fawr, it was still quite white there.
Up on Carnedd Filiast now, and quite good fun climbing over the big blocks that cover the summit. Looking over to Elididr Fawr again, now with a good view across to Snowdon. It is hard to tell if the summit of Snowdon is clear of cloud or not, but Crib Goch is well clear of cloud.
The Glyders were all clear of the cloud -
The Carneddau were still clear as well -
There was a fair bit of snow still lying all along the ridge to Mynydd Perfedd - from there you get this view of Foel-goch and Y Garn which sort of calls you to head right along the ridge to Y Garn - I have come along the ridge from Y Garn to Foel-goch - it is a good ridge walk.
However I didn`t, I headed round to Elidir Fawr instead - the arête is quite good fun if you stay right on the crest, and it gets quite scrambley if you stick to the crest all the way up instead of following the path - in places it is just as sharp as Crib Goch.
On the summit of Elidir Fawr, with a broadside view of the ridge between Foel-goch and Y Garn, with Tryfan showing nicely at the back.
Also a good view across to Snowdon, and Crib Goch is still just escaping the cloud.
Elidir Fawr is a ridge which is is covered in big blocks, so can be good fun climbing up and down over them - somewhat surprisingly, the higher northeast end of the ridge had very little snow, but the lower southwest end had some quite deep patches of snow.
Down to Elidir Fach, and really the last place you get a decent view - and the front is arriving - looking along the flank of Elidir Fawr to the Carneddau, which are now in cloud.
The cloud level has dropped on the Snowdon block, even Crib Goch has succumbed now.
And so down to the road, contour round the lower slopes of Elidir Fach, then back to the bottom of the road. A good day out before the front arrived.
