Munros + Corbetts - 2009

11 September 2009 ........ Sgurr an Fhuarain + Sgurr Mor

My second day at Loch Quoich, and things were a little better. I canoed across to the end of the track at NG 986 007, and as the corbett was clear, and the munro was in cloud, I set off to do Sgurr an Fhuarain first. I headed up the track to the east, which climbs nicely for about a kilometre or so, then levels off a bit. It is a good track, bone dry, used by the cats, so it`s maintained. Once it leveled off, I headed up a rocky ridge, and climbed up towards Meall a Choire Bhuidhe.

From there, I could look across to Gairich, and the lovely ridge I should have climbed up, if only I had used my kayak the day before.

You also get a fine view looking across to Sgurr Mor, and the ridge Meall a Choire Charnaich.

From Meall a Choire Bhuidhe, Sgurr an Fhuarain towers above you, and it is a stiff climb up - however there is a very old and very well made stalkers track that zig-zags the whole way up. There is only one bit of it that gets rather boggy, the rest of it is a classic example of how they made tracks many many years ago. You can`t see it in the picture, but it`s there somewhere.

From the top of Sgurr an Fhuarain, you get a good view of the three corbetts to the south, between Sgurr an Fhuarain and Glen Dessary. Working from east to west, here`s the long ridges that head up to Sgurr Mhurlagain.

Then there is the discrete lump of Fraoch Bheinn.

Finally there is Sgurr Cos na Breachd-laoidh, and the nice ridge running up to An Eag and Sgurr nan Coireachan - in cloud !

From a bit below the top of Sgurr an Fhuarain, you get a view of the ridge running across to Sgurr Mor.

The climb up to Sgurr Mor is a lot harder and steeper than you think it is going to be, and by the time I got to the top, the cloud was right down, and I saw nothing. So with little hanging around, I set off down the ridge to the north east, and it was surprising how low the cloud now was. Gairich was in cloud, Sgurr an Fhuarain was in cloud, the three corbetts to the south were in cloud.

So I was really glad that I had done the corbett first, otherwise I wouldn`t have had any clear tops at all.
