What a change from the previous day - Sgurr Mhairi is a corbett three kilometres east of Sligachan, at the northern end of the Red Cuillins. Here is what it looks like from Sgurr nan Gillean -
As you can see, it is covered in scree, which makes for very unpleasant climbing. However if you go round to the north east end, you can climb An Coileach mostly on grass, then head up to the summit of Sgurr Mhairi. So that is the best way to go. It is a nice walk up the ridge from An Coileach to the summit of Sgurr Mhairi.
Good views from the top of both the Red Cuillin and of the Black Cuillin. Here is the view down the various tops and ridges of the Red Cuillin, down to the other corbett on Skye, Garbh beinn, and to the munro Bla Bheinn.
It isn`t the most dramatic photograph of the Black Cuillin, it is rather dominated by Sgurr nan Gillean and Coire a Bhasteir.
For the descent, I headed south east, and is mostly scree running down to the coll Bealach na Sgairde. From there back down to the road it is all grass, but the going does get a bit tough lower down, with a mixture of bog myrtle, scraggy heather and big tufts.
The whole trip took a fair bit longer than I thought it would.
The weather wasn`t as good as the previous day, but it didn`t ever rain on me. It cleared up in the evening, and produced a nice sunset, taken at about 22.20 hrs, from the moor above Portree, looking out to Harris and Lewis.
